Wild pāua (abalone) pearls form naturally inside wild abalone found in New Zealand waters. Unlike farmed pearls, these are never cultured or forced to grow around an implant. Each one is a spontaneous creation of nature—completely unique in shape, colour, and pattern.

3. How are wild pearls different from farmed pearls?

Farmed pearls are cultivated under controlled conditions using a nucleus to trigger pearl formation. Wild pāua pearls form organically without human interference, giving them denser nacre, more vivid iridescence, and stronger structure—traits that help them last for generations.

4. Are these pearls solid or blister (mabé)?

Portia’s Pearls features both solid wild pearls (free-formed within the shell) and mabé or blister pearls, which grow on the shell’s inner surface. Mabé pearls are carefully cut, backed, and polished to highlight their natural patterns and colours.

5. Are the pāua shells and pearls collected legally?

Yes. All pāua shells and pearls are gathered in accordance with New Zealand’s fisheries and wildlife regulations. Our divers operate within legal catch limits and sustainability guidelines to ensure the protection of wild pāua populations and their coastal environments.
